Introducing TactiDeck: Build the Team, Shape the Match
TactiDeck is a project I am building around a simple idea: what if a football card game made the decisions between matches as important as the cards themselves?
It is a web-based football card collection and management game where you build a squad, choose how your players fit together, prepare for opponents, and watch those choices play out on the pitch. Collecting stronger players matters, but TactiDeck is designed so that formation, roles, tactical fit, and preparation matter too.
More than a collection
Every manager begins with a 22-player starter collection. Each card has visible football attributes such as speed, defence, attack, passing, dribbling, and physical strength. A player also has a primary position and role, possible alternative roles, and a proficiency level for each one.
That distinction is important. A striker used as a Poacher should behave differently from one used as a Target Man or False Nine. In the same way, moving a player into an alternative position is not just a visual change on the squad screen; it affects how naturally that player performs the assigned job.
Cards are not static either. Weekly training gives signals about form and potential, while players who take part in league matches gradually earn development progress. Improvements are deliberately slow and tied to relevant attributes for the player’s role, so development feels like part of a longer managerial story rather than an instant upgrade button.
A weekly football rhythm
TactiDeck’s main competition is a 12-team, double round-robin league. A season runs for 22 matchweeks, with fixtures played across the weekend. Leagues can contain both human and AI managers, allowing a new season to begin without waiting indefinitely for every place to be filled.
The week is about more than arriving at kickoff. Training reports reveal how players are performing. Before the next fixture, you can study an opponent’s recent matches to identify recurring formations, tactical tendencies, form, and key players. Once that analysis is complete, you can choose a preparation focus: protect the centre, defend wide areas, resist a press, target a high defensive line, counter-attack, control possession, or stay balanced.
These choices come with trade-offs. Protecting one area may expose another, and playing faster can create opportunities while increasing risk. The aim is to make preparation a decision, not a disguised bonus.
Matches with a reason behind them
The match engine is built to connect the result to what happened on the pitch. Player attributes determine how well actions are performed. Positions decide where players become involved. Roles influence which actions they attempt. Formations and team tactics shape space, tempo, risk, and the matchup against the opponent.
Passes, tackles, chances, shots, saves, goals, and player ratings all come from the same simulation chain. This means the score and the match report share the same underlying story instead of being generated as unrelated numbers.
Matches are also deterministic. Once the lineups and tactical setup are locked in, the game stores an immutable snapshot. The same snapshot and simulation seed always produce the same result, even if processing needs to be retried. Squad edits made after the deadline cannot rewrite a scheduled match.
After the final whistle, the report explains more than the score. It can show how tactical matchups, preparation choices, and lineup decisions contributed to the outcome, giving managers useful information for the next match.
Building the squad over time
League results reward managers with TactiCoin and opportunities to add cards. Scouting provides a more deliberate route: narrow a search by position group, position, and role, reveal candidates, and decide which player is worth signing. More specific searches cost more, so recruitment becomes another resource-management choice.
Friendly matches offer a lower-pressure place to experiment. You can face an eligible human manager or a generated opponent matched to your squad’s strength. Friendlies use the same match engine, but they do not affect league standings, permanent player development, injuries, or rewards.
Together, these systems create the loop I want TactiDeck to deliver: collect players, build a coherent squad, learn from each match, and make better decisions for the next one.
